Description
Description
This rode pairs 8-plait nylon rope with hot-dip galvanized G4 (Grade 43) high-test chain, professionally spliced into one continuous anchor line built for windlass use.
8-Plait Nylon Rope
Eight individually braided strands, woven in a balanced, bi-directional lay that eliminates the twisting, hockling, and bird's-nesting common to 3-strand rope. It flakes down cleanly into a locker instead of coiling, and feeds through a windlass gypsy the same way chain does — a major advantage in tight anchor lockers where 3-strand tends to jam or pile up unevenly.
8-plait matches 3-strand in tensile strength size-for-size, but stretches more under load, not less — that extra give is what helps absorb shock loading from chop and surge instead of transmitting it straight into your windlass, deck hardware, and anchor set. It's also more water-absorbent than 3-strand, which keeps it supple in saltwater rather than stiffening up over time.
Soak the rope in water for several hours before first use. This pre-lubricates the fibers and prevents slipping or sticking as it breaks in around the gypsy. Once broken in, 8-plait runs smoother than 3-strand and keeps improving with use.
G4 Galvanized Chain
Grade 43 (G4) high-test chain, hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance — also sold under the names G43, HT chain, or ACCO HT chain. The chain section gives you the abrasion resistance and bottom-holding weight you want where the rode contacts rock, coral, or shell bottom, while the spliced-on rope section saves weight and locker space versus running all-chain.
Splice
Rope and chain are joined with a professional eye splice through the terminal link. A properly executed splice retains roughly 70% or more of the rope's rated breaking strength — plenty of margin for recreational anchoring loads, though as with any wear point it's worth a visual check each season.
Before You Order
Confirm rope and chain diameter against your windlass manufacturer's gypsy specifications — gypsies are sized for a specific rope/chain combination, and a mismatch can cause slipping or jumping under load.
