Every anchor on the market is a compromise. How an Anchor Actually Holds a Boat

An anchor doesn't hold a boat through sheer weight. Weight matters far less than most new boaters assume — a well-designed 15-pound anchor can out-hold a poorly designed 40-pound anchor of the wrong shape. What actually creates holding power is penetration: the anchor's ability to dig beneath the seabed surface and orient its fluke (the broad blade) so that the pull of the rode drives it deeper rather than dragging it sideways.

Three variables determine how well that happens:

  • Fluke area — the surface area that bites into the bottom and resists being pulled through it. Bigger, flatter flukes generally generate more resistance per pound of metal.
  • Setting angle — the angle at which the fluke tips down and digs in when tension comes on the rode. Too shallow and the anchor skates along the surface; too steep and it can't break through hard-packed bottoms.

Anchor Materials: Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, and Stainless Steel

Stainless doesn't rely on a sacrificial coating, so there's no zinc layer to wear through, and a well-finished stainless anchor keeps its mirror shine and resists surface rust far better than galvanized steel exposed to the same conditions. It's popular specifically because it doesn't streak the bow or foredeck with rust the way a chipped galvanized anchor eventually will.

The catch is corrosion type, not corrosion resistance overall: stainless steel is vulnerable to crevice corrosion in low-oxygen environments — exactly the condition created when an anchor sits buried in anaerobic mud or sand for hours or days. Unlike surface rust, crevice corrosion happens out of sight and can pit or weaken the metal from the inside without obvious external warning signs. Stainless anchors also cost meaningfully more than galvanized equivalents of the same design, and a scratched or pitted stainless anchor is harder to satisfactorily repair than a galvanized one. Buyers should look specifically for anchors cast or forged from a marine-grade duplex stainless intended for anchors, not just any "stainless" casting, and should still inspect regularly rather than assuming a rust-free anchor is a flaw-free anchor.

Aluminum Alloy

High-strength aluminum alloy anchors — Fortress being the best-known example, with some newer spade-style designs also offering aluminum versions — deliver a genuinely different value proposition: they are a fraction of the weight of a steel anchor of equivalent holding power, sometimes 50–60% lighter. For sailors who worry about bow-down trim from a heavy ground tackle setup, or for use as a lightweight secondary/storm anchor that's easy to deploy off the stern or from a dinghy, aluminum is hard to beat on a strength-to-weight basis, and it doesn't rust at all, since aluminum forms its own stable oxide layer rather than corroding the way iron-based steels do.

The tradeoffs are mechanical rather than chemical. Aluminum is softer than steel, so it's more prone to bending a fluke or tip if it fetches up hard against rock, and most aluminum anchors are bolted assemblies rather than a single casting, meaning there are more parts (pins, nuts) to check and occasionally replace. Aluminum anchors also generally cannot be re-galvanized or easily re-machined if damaged, so a bent aluminum anchor is usually a discard-and-replace situation rather than a repair. Because aluminum performs best on its ability to bury completely in soft bottoms, it's a stronger fit for mud and sand than for rocky or coral seabeds where it might take a harder impact.
