Garmin LiveScope 2 Buying Guide: Which Transducer Is Right for You?

Garmin has officially launched the LiveScope™ 2 Series, the next evolution of the live-scanning sonar technology that changed the way anglers fish. With two new flagship transducers to choose from, the decision comes down to one core question: do you need more range, or more close-range detail? Here's everything you need to know before you buy.

Quick Answer

Fishing big water and need to find fish far from the boat? Go with the LVS44.

Fishing tighter spots and want the sharpest possible image up close? Go with the LVS42HD.

What's New in LiveScope 2

The LiveScope 2 Series brings meaningful upgrades across the board — 20% greater resolution, improved noise reduction, and expanded sonar coverage compared to the previous generation. Every transducer in the lineup also benefits from integrated image stabilization and better target separation, so fish and lures stay clear and distinct as they move through the sonar beam in real time.

Perhaps the biggest change for installers and boat owners: LiveScope 2 and LiveScope 2 HD transducers connect directly to a compatible Garmin multi-function display and power source, eliminating the need for a separate black box (GLS 10). That means a cleaner console, less wiring, and a simpler install overall.

Meet the Two Models

LiveScope 2 (LVS44) — Built for Range

The LVS44 builds on the proven foundation of LiveScope Plus and pushes performance further, delivering 20% more resolution and 25% more range — reaching out to 250 feet. This is the transducer for anglers who want to cover more water and locate fish farther from the boat.

Best for: open water, large lakes, offshore structure fishing, and anglers who prioritize maximum reach over close-in detail.

LiveScope 2 HD (LVS42HD) — Built for Detail

The LVS42HD takes a different approach, optimizing for castable distances out to 125 feet while delivering Garmin's clearest live sonar yet — offering 50% more detail at closer ranges compared to the previous model.

Best for: targeting specific structure, casting to visible fish, and fishing tighter or shallower water where fine image detail matters more than maximum range.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature LiveScope 2 (LVS44) LiveScope 2 HD (LVS42HD)
Primary strength Maximum range Close-range detail
Effective range Up to 250 ft Up to 125 ft (castable)
Resolution improvement 20% more than previous gen 50% more detail at close range
Ideal use case Big water, offshore, covering ground Precision casting, tight structure

Ice fishing variant available Yes (LiveScope 2 HD Ice Fishing Transducer)

Features Shared Across Both Models

  • Direct connection to a compatible Garmin MFD and power source — no black box needed
  • Built-in water sensor that automatically shuts off the sonar when the transducer is lifted out of the water
  • Onboard water temperature sensor for accurate readings
  • Tool-free trolling motor barrel mount and adjustable Perspective mode mount included
  • Compatible with the Spy™ Pole mount for independent sonar control
  • Compatible with the GT360UHD transducer for a combined live and 360-degree view around the boat

Ice Fishing Anglers

For hardwater fishing, the LiveScope 2 HD Ice Fishing Transducer delivers the same high-definition sonar in a package built for cold-weather use — a shorter, flexible cold-water cable and a convenient all-in-one power/network cable, packaged with the 0-degree shaft mount right in the box.

Already running LiveScope Plus and wondering if the upgrade is worth it? The move to a direct MFD connection alone means a cleaner install with one less component on the boat — on top of the resolution and range gains.

Pricing

The LiveScope 2 Series is available now, with suggested retail prices ranging from $1,999.99 to $2,199.99.
