How to Pick the Right Marine Livewell Pump
Get the sizing, type, and installation wrong, and even the nicest tank in the boat turns into a bait morgue by lunchtime. Here's how to buy a pump once instead of three times.
Start With Flow Rate, Not the Marketing Number
Livewell pumps are rated in gallons per hour (GPH), and it's tempting to just buy the biggest number on the shelf. Don't. The right size depends on how much water your livewell holds and how often that water needs to turn over.
The rule of thumb most riggers and pump manufacturers use is a full turnover every ten minutes — six times an hour. That gives you a simple formula:

If you're keeping fragile baitfish like shad or pilchards in warm water, lean toward the higher end of the range — warm, salty water holds less dissolved oxygen, so you need more circulation to compensate. Hardier bait in cooler water can get by on less.
Why the Number on the Box Isn't the Number You'll Get
Every pump loses flow once it's actually plumbed into a boat. Vertical lift is the big one: pushing water up and over the gunwale or transom eats into output fast, and a rise of roughly 40 inches can cut delivery by around 30 percent. Long hose runs, narrow tubing, extra fittings and elbows, and voltage drop from corroded or undersized wiring all take another bite — installed systems commonly deliver 20–30% less than their rated GPH.
Pump Types: What's Actually Turning the Water
Not all livewell pumps move water the same way, and the mechanism affects both bait survival and how long the pump lasts.
Centrifugal pumps are the standard for good reason. An impeller spins inside a housing and pushes water out smoothly and continuously, which is gentler on delicate bait than pulsing designs. Most quality dedicated livewell pumps — Rule, Attwood/Tsunami, Johnson, SHURflo — are centrifugal.
Diaphragm and displacement pumps are cheaper and sometimes marketed for livewell duty, but they move water in pulses rather than a steady stream. That jerky delivery can stress or injure sensitive baitfish, and these pumps generally don't hold up as well under continuous duty. They're better suited to washdown or freshwater transfer jobs than to keeping bait alive for hours.
Bilge pumps are not livewell pumps, even though they look similar and are sometimes pressed into service. They're designed to evacuate standing water quickly, not to circulate it gently and continuously — using one on a livewell tends to either stress the bait or fail early from duty it wasn't built for. If you want a bilge-pump-based setup, use a proper pump box that lets the pump draw clean water from a flooded chamber rather than plumbing a raw bilge pump straight to the tank.
Mounting: Immersible vs. Pickup/In-Line
How the pump draws water matters as much as what kind of pump it is.
Immersible (transom or external) pumps mount below the waterline, outside the hull, and pull water in directly — no separate intake fitting required. They're simple to install and easy to service since you're not fishing wires and hoses through a livewell wall, but they do need to sit fully submerged below the waterline to prime, since centrifugal pumps are not self-priming.
In-line/pickup pumps mount inside the boat and pull water through a separate thru-hull fitting or pickup. This keeps the pump out of the water (easier access, less exposure to marine growth) but adds a thru-hull to maintain and a longer plumbing run to account for in your GPH math.
Whichever style you choose, mount the outlet pointing upward to avoid trapping air (which causes airlocks and lost prime), and consider a downstream valve if you need to dial back flow for delicate bait.
Voltage, Amperage, and Wiring
Almost all livewell pumps run on 12V DC, though larger high-output models on bigger boats may be 24V. Before you buy, confirm:
- The pump's voltage matches your boat's system
- The amperage draw is within what your battery and wiring can support, especially if it's running continuously for hours
- Wire gauge is sized for the run length — undersized or corroded wiring causes voltage drop, which quietly reduces flow even from a correctly-sized pump
If you're running a livewell pump for extended trips, treat it like any other continuous electrical load: dedicated fuse or breaker, marine-grade tinned wire, and clean connections.
Features Worth Paying For
Cartridge/replaceable pump heads. Many modern livewell pumps (Attwood Tsunami being a common example) use a quick-release cartridge system, so a worn motor can be swapped in seconds without re-plumbing hoses or removing mounting screws. Given that pump motors wear out well before the plumbing does, this alone can be worth the upgrade.
Adjustable outlet nozzles. Being able to tune flow rate and direction at the outlet lets you soften delivery for fragile bait like shrimp or crustaceans, or open it up for schooling baitfish that want more current.
Timers and aerator/recirculation modes. A built-in timer that cycles the pump on and off conserves battery on long runs without a full-time flow. Some units also offer an aeration-only mode that recirculates tank water through a spray bar without pulling fresh water — useful when you want oxygenation without diluting a livewell you've dosed with additives.
Backup capability. On boats running multiple bait tanks or tuna tubes, a second pump (or a manifold that lets one pump serve as backup for another) is cheap insurance against a single point of failure ruining a day of pre-caught bait.
Don't Double Up Pump Duty
It's tempting to run one pump for both livewell circulation and deck washdown to save money and wiring, but resist it. Washdown pumps are built for high-pressure, intermittent bursts (commonly 40–70 PSI), while livewell pumps are built for steady, low-pressure, continuous flow. Asking one pump to do both jobs tends to shorten its life and compromise both functions — cheap insurance is a second, dedicated pump.
Quick Buying Checklist
- Calculate your target GPH: tank capacity × 6, then size up to cover installed flow losses (lift, hose length, fittings).
- Choose a centrifugal pump for anything beyond casual, short-duration use.
- Decide immersible vs. in-line based on where you have room to mount and whether you're willing to add a thru-hull.
- Confirm voltage and amperage against your boat's electrical system and wire gauge.
- Look for a replaceable cartridge design so a future failure is a five-minute fix, not a re-plumb.
- Keep livewell and washdown duties on separate pumps.
- If you're running fragile or high-value bait, budget for a backup pump or at least keep a spare cartridge/impeller aboard.
Get the sizing and pump type right, mount it correctly below the waterline (or plumb the thru-hull cleanly), and wire it properly, and a livewell pump is one of those parts you install once and forget about — until the day it saves your bait well past when a cheaper setup would have already quit.
