Why It's Worth It
The two-speed gearbox gives you a high gear for quick trimming and a low gear (44.8:1 power ratio) for grinding in heavy loads, with a working load limit nearly 900 lbs higher than the 40ST. The Wavespring self-tailing jaws automatically adapt to a wider range of line diameters at this size, accepting up to 9/16" line rather than 1/2" — relevant if you're running larger-diameter sheets or halyards. Lewmar's design lets you service the winch with no tools: unscrew the top cap by hand to access the drum and center stem. A manual-to-electric conversion kit remains available at this size if you want to upgrade to powered operation later.
